The project “Development of macrocyclic metallocomplexes - inhibitors of formation of amyloid fibril in neurodegenerative diseases” (project manager S. Yarmoluk) applied in collaboration with Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of NASU was supprted by STCU and NASU grant (N 5508).

Preliminary defence of thesis for Doctor of Science degree by Vladyslava Kovalska

In July 2011 the Scientific Council of Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine approved the preliminary defence of Doctor thesis of Vladyslava Kovalska "Fluorescent dyes for detection of proteins of various space organization".

2011

In January 2011 Fluorescent Probes Design group joined the European Network on G-Quartets and Quadruplex Nucleic Acids (G4-NET) in frames of European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST, Action MP0802).

Award of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine
2010

Mykhaylo Losytskyy was one of the winners of the "Award of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the most gifted young scientists in fundamental and applied sciences and scientific-technological developments in 2010".

Chapter in the book "Advanced Fluorescence Reporters in Chemistry and Biology III"

2010

The book "Advanced Fluorescence Reporters in Chemistry and Biology III" appeared in the Springer Series on Fluorescence. The Chapter "Optimized dyes for protein and nucleic acid detection" was written by Sergiy Yarmoluk, Vladyslava Kovalska and Kateryna Volkova.

2010

Starting from 1 February 2010 in collaboration with the Institute of Organic Chemistry of NASU we begin performing the Project "Development of fluorescent dyes for detection of oligomeric amyloid intermediates in neurodegenerative diseases" (Project Manager S. Yarmoluk) that is supported by STCU (grant 5281). This project continues the work performed during the successfully completed previous STCU-NASU project (grand 4936).

In June 2010 the Scientific Council of Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine approved the topic of Doctor thesis in biology of Vladyslava Kovalska "Fluorescent dyes for detection of various space organization of proteins".

Participation of Kateryna Volkova in FENS forum

2010

On 3-7 July 2010 ëèïíÿ 2010 Kateryna Volkova participated in Forum of European Neuroscience that took place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Such forums are regular events organized by Federation of all European neuroscience societies (FENS). Kateryna presented poster report: "Fluorescent cyanine-based screening assay for inhibitors of amyloid fibrils formation".

2009

On 6-9 September 2009 Kateryna Volkova participated in 11-th Conference on Methods and Applications of Fluorescence that took place in Budapest, Hungary. Kateryna acquainted with the latest achievements in the field of fluorescent detection of biological molecules and had fruitful communication with foreign colleagues. She also presented the poster report: "Fluorescent amyloid-specific trimethine cyanine dyes for insulin aggregation inhibitor assay".

On the 23-rd of May 2009 Kateryna Volkova successfully defended her PhD thesis in biology (specialty "biotechnology") "Cyanine dyes as fluorescent probes for fibrilar α-synuclein detection".

Starting from 1 October 2008 in collaboration with the Institute of Organic Chemistry of NASU we begin performing the Project "Development of fluorescent dyes for specific detection of amyloid protein nanostructures causing neurodegenerative diseases" (Project Manager S. Yarmoluk) that is jointly supported by STCU and NASU (grant 4936).

During 2008 together with international team of collaborators from France, Russia and Uzbekistan, Prof. Sergiy Yarmoluk and Dr. Anatoliy Balanda participate in ECO-NET-2008 Project "Inhibition of the expression of the growth factor IGF-1 and its receptor with the modified fluorescent nucleic acids".

Since 2008 Prof. Sergiy Yarmoluk is a member of Editorial Board of the Biotechnic and Histochemistry. This interdisciplinary journal embraces all aspects of histochemistry and microtechnic in all areas of the biological sciences from botany to cell biology to medicine. Such topics as in situ hybridization, cytochemical probes, autoradiography, light and electron microscopy, tissue culture, image analysis, cytogenetics and automation or computerization of investigative procedures are covered by Biotechnic and Histochemistry.

The study of the dyes interaction with the beta-pleated protein aggregates in the University of Twente

From September till December 2007 Kateryna Volkova was on the training in the University of Twente (Enschede, The Netherlands) in the Biophysical Engineering group (Prof. Vinod Subramaniam). She performed the study of the dyes complexes with the beta-pleated protein aggregates by the polarized fluorescence, time resolved fluorescence and atomic force microscopy methods. Basing on the results of the studies the publications are being prepared.

The 10-th Conference on Methods and Applications of Fluorescence: Spectroscopy, Imaging and Probes

Vladyslava Kovalska, Mykhaylo Losytskyy, Anatoliy Balanda and Kateryna Volkova participated in the 10-th Conference on Methods and Applications of Fluorescence: Spectroscopy, Imaging and Probes (9-12 September, Salzburg, Austria). The scientists from all over the world dealing with fluorescence based methods meet on this Conference each two years. Our collaborators familiarized themselves with the last achievements in the field of fluorescent probes application and communicated with the scientists working in the fluorescent probes area. Our group presented four poster reports at the Conference:

  • 4-Oxo-4,6,7,8-tetrahydropyrrolo[1,2-a]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidinestyrylcyanines - Novel Fluorescent Dyes for TPE Detection of RNA.
  • Symmetric benzothiazole and benzoselenazole squaraine dyes as fluorescent probes for proteins detection.
  • Novel Fluorescent Dyes for Selective Fibrillar α-Synuclein Detection.
  • The mechanism of benzothiazole styrylcyanine dyes binding with dsDNA.

 

23.02.2007

On the 23rd of February 2007 the member of our group Anatoliy Balanda defended his Ph.D thesis in bioorganic chemistry. The thesis of Anatoliy was devoted to the synthesis of styrylcyanine dyes and study of these dyes as possible probes for fluorescent detection of nucleic acids. We congratulate Anatoliy Balanda!!!

First Asian Spectroscopy Conference and Asian Biospectroscopy Conference

Vladyslava Kovalska and Mykhaylo Losytskyy presented their reports in the First Asian Spectroscopy Conference and Asian Biospectroscopy Conference that took place from January, 29, till February, 2 2007 in Bangalore, India. This Conference is the important Asian meeting in the field of biological applications of spectroscopy. Our researchers represented Ukraine at this meeting; acquainted themselves with the state of the art of spectroscopy science in Asia (particularly in India); their reports concerned such important and interesting scientific problems as the development of fluorescent probes for selective detection of amyloid proteins and the study of mechanism of styryl dyes binding to DNA. At the Conference our researchers represented two poster presentations:

  • Cyanine Dyes as Novel Fluorescent Probes for Selective Amyloid Proteins Detection.
  • Study of Styryl Dyes-dsDNA Binding Equilibrium.
XXI IUPAC Symposium on Photochemistry

Vladyslava Kovalska and Mykhaylo Losytskyy participated in the XXI IUPAC Symposium on Photochemistry that was held on 2-7 April 2006 in Kyoto, Japan. This Symposium is one of the biggest worldwide meetings in this scientific direction; more than 500 oral and poster reports were presented there. Our researchers represented Ukraine at this Symposium; their reports concerned such actual problems as the development of fluorescent probes for nonspecific staining of proteins; mechanism of cyanines binding to DNA; development of two-photon excited fluorescent probes; and fluorescent J-aggregates. On the Conference our researchers represented four poster presentations:

  • Carbocyanine dye j-aggregates formed in DNA groove for fluorescent imaging of DNA.
  • Homodimer styryl dyes for two-photon excited fluorescent detection of nucleic acids.
  • Designing of tri- and pentamethine cyanines as fluorescent probes for specific dsDNA detection.
  • Novel LUCY stains for non-specific fluorescent detection of proteins.


5th Prague Workshop on Photoinduced Molecular Processes

Kateryna Volkova and Anatoliy Balanda took part in the 5th Prague Workshop on Photoinduced Molecular Processes (PIMoP) which was held on the 12-14 March 2006 in Prague (Czech Republic). This event was a combination of meeting & workshop devoted to the interface of molecular photophysics, photochemistry, and ultrafast photoinduced processes in new materials. On the Vth PIMoP our researchers introduced three oral presentations:

  • New Method For Covalent Fluorescent Labeling With Hemicyanine Dyes
  • Synthesis Of New Benzothiazole Homodimer Styryl Dyes For Fluorescent DNA Detection Upon Tpe
  • Studies Of Bridged Pentamethine Cyanine Dyes As Fluorescent Probes For Specific dsDNA Detection

 

Prof. Sergiy Yarmoluk became the member of the Program Committee of the MAF Conferences

2005

In 2005 Prof. Sergiy Yarmoluk became the member of the Program Committee of the Methods and Applications of Fluorescence: Spectroscopy, Imaging and Probes (MAF) Conferences. Biannual MAF Conferences are the most valuable meetings of the scientists from all over the world dealing with the fluorescence spectroscopy methods.

Sergiy Yarmoluk, Vladyslava Kovalska, Mykhaylo Losytskyy, Anatoliy Balanda and Kateryna Volkova participated in the 9-th International Conference on Methods and Applications of Fluorescence: Spectroscopy, Imaging and Probes (MAF) that took place on the 4-7 September 2005 in Lisbon (Portugal)
This Conference is the biggest and the most important one in the field of the probes for fluorescent detection and imaging of biological objects. Dr. Sergiy Yarmoluk was elected the member of the Permanent Steering Committee of the International Conference on Methods and Applications of Fluorescence: Spectroscopy, Imaging and Probes. Now Dr. Sergiy Yarmoluk is the representative of Ukraine in the Conference Committee.
